The New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) which we use in GLM Omega 3 Plus is unique to New Zealand and has gained reputation worldwide as it may contain a prostaglandin inhibitor that exerts anti-inflammatory effects beneficial to joint health.
New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel is used for symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Researchers report that an extract of New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel reduced symptoms in dogs with advanced arthritis. The mussel is harvested whole. The meat is then removed, dried and powdered and usually sold as Green Lipped Mussel extract. However, this method does not actually provide a true extract.
Only one company has the technology to extract a true concentrated extract from the shell. This company is in Christchurch, New Zealand (only a few minutes away from our own facility). They extract the active ingredients, keeping all the active lipids intact, and end up with a 5:1 ratio enabling the usual 2,500mgs potency offered by other extracts to be concentrated into just 500mgs.
