More 'bashing' of Supplements...

The anti-supplement lobby is at it again by highlighting a study in which vitamins and minerals given to babies with Down ’s syndrome did not provide any benefits. As a result of this study they are suggesting that supplements don’t work and indeed may be dangerous.

Nothing new in these claims, but it does continue to amaze me why the media gives these negative reports so much credence and yet choose to ignore the very positive studies highlighting the benefits of many nutrient supplements. The positive studies far outweigh the negative ones and any thinking person can easily see the benefits.

Anyone who is knowledgeable about the subject of supplements know that the prime objective of these nutrients are to prevent degenerative disease and that they will not work miracles for those people who already have a chronic disease.

It's amazing what clever, but Dishonest Marketing can do?

There has been an ongoing saga for the last couple of years relating to Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals who become well known through their promotion of a product called Enzyte. You may remember them through the ‘Smiling Bob’, adverts.

The product was overhyped and many fraudulent claims were made.

However, it has all now come to an end and it would seem that justice has been done and Bob is not smiling any longer!

Red Yeast Rice Extract Supplements...Caution!

Quite frequently we are asked why we do not produce a supplement containing Red Yeast Rice Extract which is effective in many people for lowering cholesterol.

The answer is always the same. Simply that it has a similar action to that of a statin drug and as a result carries the same risk which we will not expose our customers to.

A number of supplement companies in the US have got into trouble with the FDA for marketing this product, and some of them are facing possible law suits from consumers for the same reasons as that of some of the manufacturers of statin drugs.

The law suits are based on the damage these drugs (and supplements) inflict on the body.

1-in-7 chance of a Medical Mishap!

I have written before about what dangerous places hospitals are and have quoted statistics from the US. Now, in New Zealand we have some of our own and they are not good, although they are apparently quite a bit better than Australia,

According to a report issued by the New Zealand Ministry of Health you have a 1 in 7 chance of experiencing some form of a medical mishap if you become a patient in a New Zealand hospital.

These ‘mishaps’ may be quite minor such as staff forgetting to give you a pill with your lunch, or as serious as having the wrong leg cut off…

Gluten/Wheat Intolerance...

Question: from Sam

Gluten/wheat intolerance, what causes this condition and is there a remedy please?

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life)

Unfortunately, there is no one clear answer as to what actually causes food sensitivities or allergies, or any allergy for that matter. There are many factors that are known to contribute, but no one defined cause.

Some allergies have a genetic component. I.e. if one parent has allergies the chances are statistically likely that one in three of their children will have allergies or sensitivities too. If both parents have allergies the chances rise to seven in ten. There has also been alot of controversy over the issue of breastfeeding, and the fact that babies that are not breastfed may be more likely to develop allergies as they are not getting the antibodies from their mother.

ConsumerLab finds Lead In Tumeric Supplements!

ConsumerLab are at it again which sensational headlines about lead in supplements! As usual they do not name the supplements concerned but instead use the news releases to frighten the consumer into paying a subscription to find out.

I have written before about ConsumerLab which is not a consumer organization, nor are they a laboratory, but very much a profit making enterprise who tries to profit from both industry and consumers.

I think that their methods are unethical. Anyway I won’t dwell on that issue for the moment but rather focus on what the latest ‘announcement’ is all about.

They recently tested Tumeric supplements for potency and contaminants. Although they found most of the supplements did not contain the stated amounts of active ingredients the main thrust of their news release was that they found 18.7mcgs of lead per daily serving in one well known supplement.
